An Ocean Plan for American Samoa
As part of the Obama National Ocean Policy, ecoLOGIC designed and facilitated a three-year process to develop a planning document for the American Samoa Government, the White House National Ocean Council, and US Federal Government agencies. The process was conducted through a core planning team of federal and local planning agencies that sought stakeholder input and review early and often throughout. The plan for American Samoa was completed in 2018.

A reservation system at Hanauma Bay
In response to the pause created by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Caldwell convened a Steering Committee of diverse community interests to map a permanent path for change for one of the most overloved corners of Hawaii nei. Despite being in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, EcoLOGIC in partnership with Good Juju Co. designed and created a collaborative (virtual) space for the Hanauma Bay Steering Committee to address natural resource harm and overcapacity plaguing Hanauma Bay. The multiple layers of County, State, and Federal agency interactions–as well as a past consent decree–made this a particularly complex endeavor. From those meetings, the Steering Committee generated highly productive and impactful outcomes, such as the establishment of a reservation system for Hanauma Bay visitors, designated visiting hours for Hawaii residents only, and measurable regeneration of Hanamua Bay’s reef in less than two years.

Innovative Solutions to Visitor Management in Waipi’o Valley
EcoLOGIC partnered with Good Juju Co. to design a workspace for a diverse group of Waipiʻo Valley community members, farmers, local businesses, and agency partners to collaborate. The community group came together to share and develop innovative ideas and solutions for managing over-tourism in Waipi’o Valley. This wahi pana has been under tremendous pressure from over-tourism for decades. The issues are complex, and the solutions will take time, but these meetings provided a solid foundation for shared commitments and desires across the multitude and generations of interests.

Designing Community-Led Destination Management Across Hawaii
Stemming from the pause created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority launched a state-wide initiative to support community-led strategies to address over-tourism. EcoLOGIC and Good Juju Co. designed and facilitated the interactive community Steering Group meetings with Maui, Oahu, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai, and Hawaii.
Each Island Steering Committee crafted solutions and strategies to address over-tourism on their respective islands. These committees then shared their work with the larger community of each island in multiple virtual meetings. These innovative virtual meetings were dynamic and interactive, with hundreds of participants dialoguing on actionable solutions for their respective islands in a new and unique way that transcended boring Zoom meetings. This work culminated into the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority Destination Management Action Plans.

Community outreach events, or “Information Exchanges” were developed across all islands. Overwhelmingly positive results and response to format and execution and development of collaborative, productive, and safe space- which resulted in a Community Input Report (link here) and a license for visitors is in the works. More info about the overall project available at this link.
